Benjamin West
(October 10, 1738 – March 11, 1820)
Benjamin West was born into a Philadelphia Quaker family. Despite Quaker disapproval he became a renowned painter. He was made the official historical painter for the royal family of England. He is still well known partly because of the children’s book Benjamin West and His Cat Grimalkin by Marguerite Henry and Wesley Dennis.
