John Greenleaf Whittier
(1807–92)
John Greenleaf Whittier was an abolitionist, a poet, and politician. He served in the Massachusetts legislature. He was one of the founders of the U.S. Republican Party in 1854. But he is most known for his inspirational poetry. The town Whittier, California, and the college there are named for him.
